About the work

"Comedians Read My Father's Day Cards" is a compilation of Carmina Miana's first 2 months in comedy.

Her performances are irreverent, absurdist and at this time, categorized as "fictitious" due to legal implications.

Not interested in repeating herself, Miana shares these segments as a means to capture the ephemeral nature of performance and storytelling. This is not just performance documentation. This is a retelling of a story she has been forced to forget, abandon and ultimately move on from.

Dedicated to her son, James Miana, this work continues Miana's body of work involving motherhood, home and safety. She hopes these digital markers will aid her son one day when he is ready to find her.

You too may be sought out to understand the fulsome image of a woman who can be anything and everything, even a piece of shit.

"Comedians Read My Father's Day Cards" is being screened as part of the WIP: Work in Process event, and Carmina was a participant of the Frugal Filmmaking workshop.

About the artist

Carmina Miana (@meanugh), an Ottawa-based interdisciplinary artist, explores Filipino diaspora experiences through fibre arts, installation stop motion animation and photography. Her work examines tensions between care, sacrifice, and cultural identity, inviting viewers to reflect on transformation and belonging.

Her recent practice has involved performance in comedy, though most of her comedic peers would say, “please stop making everyone uncomfortable — the goal is laughter”.
