Tired of putting off your website? Unsure of where to start? Let's work on it together using free and open-source software!
Are you...
- a racialized / BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Colour) artist, designer, or creative?
- looking to design a personal website to showcase your work, thoughts, or next project?
- tired of paying monthly for website builders that lock your content into their platform?
- not sure what a website domain is, or where to find good fonts to use?
- searching for a chill and welcoming community of creatives to collaborate with, get feedback from, and exchange ideas with?
You're in luck! Join us this June for a Pay-What-You-Can website workshop. 🌐
What you'll learn
Over the course of three 2-hour sessions, you'll learn how to plan out your website, design the look and feel using Penpot (a Figma alternative), and create the site using Publii (a site generator). All the tools we'll be covering are free, open source software, and cross-platform.
We'll go over the fundamentals creating a website, such as:
Week 1:
- what even is a website, anyway?
- picking out a www.domain-name.com
- planning out your site's structure
Week 2:
- finding cool fonts, colour combinations, and inspo
- using an interface design tool to mock-up the site
Week 3:
- building the website using a static site generator (SSG) and content management system (CMS)
- customizing a theme with simple Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
- adding custom embed code to add interactive elements like tip jars
- tips and tricks for keeping the site accessible
- hosting the website online for FREE!
The workshops aim to strike the right balance between teaching how the tools works, creative techniques, and thinking critically about website.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this for?
This class is perfect for beginners, as well as people who have some experience and are looking to revamp their site with new tools. No coding experience required!
This workshops series was designed by and for creatives, designers, and artists who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Colour) / racialized / members of the global majority.
If you're looking to create a website to showcase your artworks, films, photos, music, interviews, activism, poetry, podcast, stories, personal narratives, or any other creative expression using a website, than this workshop is for you!
I'm joining in person. What should I bring?
For the first session, please bring something to take notes. This could be a notebook, your phone, and/or a laptop.
For weeks 2 and 3, please bring a laptop computer. You'll need to create a Penpot account for Week 2, and to download Publii for Week 3.
Which tools / software / platforms will be taught?
In Week 2, the website design techniques will be demo'd using Penpot, an open-source user interface design web app similar to Figma.
In Week 3, we'll be using Publii to create the site pages and publish the website to a free web host. Publii is a free, open-source, desktop-based application which acts as both a static-site generator and content management system.
As a participant, you are free to use whatever software tool(s) that best meet your needs, and we'll discuss different options during Week 1. That said, the workshop series and assistance provided will focus on Penpot (for Week 2) and Publii (Week 3).
What won't this workshop series cover?
This workshop series won't teach you how to create websites from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Instead, you'll learn how to use a site generator. That said, I'll share some resources for those who do want to learn more advanced website programming. The platform we'll be using also allows you to add custom code if you have the knowledge to do so.
The workshop also isn't ideal for websites that need backend databases such as e-commerce sites, forums, mobile apps, social media sites, sites that need to be edited on a phone, sites that require multiple simultaneous editors, etc.
Will the sessions be recorded?
The online sessions will be recorded, but the recordings will only be shared with registered participants.
Accessibility Information
The Website Workshop series is a hybrid, and you have the choice of joining us in-person or online.
The in-person portion is happening at the Arts Court building, which has an accessible ramp, accessible and all-gender washrooms, automated doors, and an elevator. Arts Court also offers transport chairs and walkers free of charge by reservation.
The online portion of the event will happen over Zoom video-conferencing, and there will be auto-generated captions / transcripts available.
I can't make it... Will there be more events in the future?
Short-answer: Yes!
Everyone who has signed up for the mailing list will receive future updates on other events.
This is the first pilot run for this workshop series, so future programming may explore different formats (in-person, online, synchronous, asynchronous) based on the feedback provided by this first cohort.
The plan is to provide a variety of learning materials in different formats and build a community of creatives who are interested in this sort of thing.
Are there any community guidelines / safe(r) spaces policy?
Everyone who participates in the workshop agrees to follow our safe(r) spaces policy:
This space welcomes people across races, gender expressions, orientations, abilities, and lived experiences. We are committed to respecting people’s boundaries, pronouns, and consent.
As such, there is a zero tolerance policy for bigotry, harassment, or violence.
This is an encouraging and affirming learning space which understands that everyone has different experience and comfort levels with the technology used. Everyone is encouraged to share their knowledge and resources on the topic with the community.

About candide ꘎ media
Hi, I'm Candide! I’m passionate about empowering creatives like you to tell their own stories. candide ꘎ media is the community I'm creating to learn about independent and accessible content creation using open source software.
I've developed this workshop because although there are tons of resources out there that show you how to create a website, they require the use of platforms that lock you in for a monthly/yearly fee, place ads on your free site, or aren't very beginner-friendly.
It doesn't have to be this way!
There are website generators out there which are free, don't require that you touch a command line, and allow you to host the files on the server of your choice.
I've been using tools like Publii and Penpot to design and develop websites for myself and clients, and I want to share my tips and tricks with fellow BIPOC creators who are new to site making. I’m a big advocate for using open-source tools to make content creation more accessible.
Join us as dive into the world of websites! 🌀
Land Acknowledgement
I would like to honour the original owners and custodians of the land on which we inhabit and create. This workshop series will take place on the unsurrendered territories of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg (Odàwàng).
As a guest on these lands, I am committed to listening to Indigenous people, working towards the strengthening of solidarity between Black and Indigenous communities, and supporting the movement toward decolonization.
